Why I love Iceland
I first arrived in Iceland in late 1949 from the USA as a very young World War Two veteran and an employee of Lockheed Corporation at Keflavik Airport.

I remember flying to Iceland with great trepidation as to what I would see. While some of my fellow passengers had the mistaken idea that Iceland was a barren land of Eskimos and Igloos, I, fortunately had read up on its actualities.

On arrival at Keflavik Airport, we were greeted by to the most beautiful ladies I had ever seen. I was impressed that everybody at the Airport spoke English so well.

The first ride into Reykjavik was so impressive. Here was a land of contrasts, with a beauty different from what I had ever seen before.

The first night I went to Reykjavik, I had dinner at the Hotel Borg. The meal was great and the rest of the night was spent listening and dancing to divine music. The European sophistication of the ambience that evening has stuck to my happy memories to this date.

I began to take an interest in the Icelandic people and their language. It was difficult at first, but later circumstances eventually allowed a fundamental grasp of what to me was a truly difficult but charming language.

I met my now Wife of 60 years. She worked at the Keflavik Base Dry Cleaning store.  I brought some clothes to be dry cleaned and saw her, Thorey Grimsdottir. I was so taken with her beauty and shy charm, that I went to the Ice Cream store next door and brought Her an ice Cream Cone.  That was for me the luckiest day of my life and the beginning of  the wonderful life we both have had and my lifelong romance with this unique land called Iceland.

Through Thorey, I met her family and friends and have continued through those 60 years to be honored to still have those still alive as my true friends.

The Icelandic people have qualities not easy to find. They are truthful, honest, greatly family oreiented and hard working and enjoy life as they experience it.  I have travelled on Business over the entire world and in no other country have I ever seen these collective qualities except in Iceland.

Thorey and I usually spend some time in the summer in Iceland and eagerly look forward to it.  I and Thorey have been to Iceland 56 times together.  I have stopped over on business trips for a day or two an additional 27 times. I continue to always use Icelandair for my business trips to Europe. Also, Thorey and I have brought more than a dozen of my relatives and friends to Iceland on some of our visits.

Finally, I thank God that I came to Iceland a long time ago. It has given me my adored Wife, my wonderful Daughter, Son In Law and two remarkable Grandsons. Also, it has given me its people and its customs, for which I am forever grateful.

Thank you all,

Gerry Doyle
