The most popular ways to travel between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavík are by private cars and buses. But private transfer is another option with a taxi. Taxis are available 24/7 at the airport and offer the maximum possible convenience. They are located right outside the arrival terminal. It is advisable to ask about the price before setting off. In 2022, a new law was passed through parliament regarding taxi driving in Iceland, going into effect in April 2023. The main changes were:

• Removal of restrictions on the number of licenses to drive a taxi in Iceland. Before, there was a limited number of licenses, limiting competition in the field.
• Taxi license holders are no longer required to have taxi driving as their main profession.
• Taxi drivers are no longer required to be connected to a dispatch central (a taxi station)

While these changes have indeed increased the competition in the market, reports of cheating taxi drivers have unfortunately also increased, mainly with regards to charging above agreed amount.

How to take a taxi from the airport in Iceland?

Here are a few things to keep in mind when taking a taxi from Keflavik airport:

• Check in advance how far it is to your destination
• Review the taxi’s price list before getting in
• Fixed prices should be based on a price list
• Taxi drivers are obliged to accept payments by card
• Get a receipt for your payment

Does Iceland have Uber?

No, Uber is not available in Iceland and neither are familiar names Bolt or Lyft. But there is a local alternative called Hopp, that works in the same way through an app and with pre-payment. Hopp started out as an e-scooter company but expanded their services to include taxis a few years ago.

Private and Public Airport Buses

The most popular way to get to and from the airport besides private cars are buses. The best known of these is Flybus by Icelandia and the other big private bus company driving this route is Grayline with Airport Direct. Their buses park next to the terminal while the public bus stop from Strætó’s route 55 is a short walk away from the terminal. That means they are slightly more convenient, but more expensive than the public buses as you might expect.
