Icelandic Bands at Airwaves 2015
Airwaves is the best known music festival in Iceland, held yearly in the dark month of November. Hundreds of bands share with us their talents in many different venues. People flock to our small island in order to listen to the beautiful sound of music, focusing on new music in particular.
Airwaves 2015 features mostly local talent, but there are also a lot of foreign artists. Some of the ones playing this year are Hot Chip, Ariel Pink, Weaves, East India Youth and many more!
But it’s an Icelandic Music Festival, with a focus on Icelandic artists, so here is a small fraction of the Icelandic bands that I think you just can’t miss at Airwaves 2015!
1. KIASMOS – Experimental Techno
Probably a lot of people are familiar with the composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Ólafur Arnalds. Kiasmos is his experimental techno project, formed with Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands. I could listen to this for hours.
Kiasmos - Looped
2. OJBA RASTA – Icelandic Reggae
A reggae music band consisting of a group of musicians. With all kinds of instruments they create music inspired from Jamaica mixed with world music, funk and soul. A very good addition to the Icelandic music scene.
Ojba Rasta - Gjafir Jarðar
3. AGENT FRESCO – Alternative Pop/Math rock
A group of creative musicians who like pushing the boundaries of music, playing alternative pop, metal and math-rock. You can really hear that a lot of thought and feeling has been put to the songs.
Agent Fresco - Wait For Me
4. DJ FLUGVÉL OG GEIMSKIP (Dj Airplane and Spaceship) – Horror/Electro with Keyboards and High Pitched Voice
This video was nominated the best video at the Icelandic Music Awards 2013 (which doesn’t surprise me: there’s a guinea pig in space). DJ Flugvél og Geimskip is an adorable girl who’s not afraid to go a different way.
With lights on her fingers, smoke machines and storytelling between songs she sings about outer space, dreams and wild cats. It can be described as horror-electronic music sung in high pitched voice with keyboards. Leaves you feeling good and hoping that aliens exist.
GLAMOUR IN SPACE! (GLAMÚR Í GEIMNUM!) - dj. flugvél og geimskip / dj. airplane and spaceship
5. Júníus Meyvant – Emotional Folk Pop
A singer who performs alone with his guitar, emotional folk pop. Althought his name sounds extremely icelandic, This is actually his stage name. His real name is “Unnar Gísi Sigmundsson” and he comes from Vestmannaeyjar islands.
Júnís Meyvant - Color Decay
