Hafnarfjörður Viking Festival

Hafnarfjörður Viking Festival will take place on 13 to 18 June, with an open market, viking battles, games, music, handicraft and a viking school for children. Hosted by the reenactment group Rimmugýgur, it is the oldest and biggest viking festival and market of its kind in Iceland.

The Viking Festival is a family event and always spans 5 to 6 days. Opening hours this year are from 11 AM to 6 PM and admission is free. The event takes place at the picturesque Víðistaðatún Park in the heart of Hafnarfjörður. Vikings sell their produce at the market, leather goods, fur, silver jewellery, swords and exquisite horns. They show the Viking way of living, fighting, dancing, telling stories and roasting a lamb.

Rimmugýgur, the group hosting the event, has a name that literally means “female battle troll” and was also an axe in the most famous of the Icelandic Sagas, The Saga of Njáll. Rimmugýgur had seven founding members in 1997 but has now grown to around 200 members.

Through the years, many artists from Europe and America have come to Iceland to honor the memory of our forefathers. On a few occasions, there have also been viking weddings and viking baptism.
