SMOKE – book launch
A night of photography with exhibition by Theo Elias and live electronic music performances by AnA and Mighty Bear. For one night only, the music artists interpret the photographs to bring a unique performance with smoke and visual projections. During the night, the book Smoke by Theo Elias is released and will be available for purchase.
Smoke is the result of Elias’ six years of journeys to Iceland, during which he’s photographed people he met at bars, on the street or when he’s hitch hiked around the country. These portraits are mixed together with stark contrasted images of landscapes and photographs of nightlife in the villages and cities around Iceland. With vulnerable, poetic and sometimes violent images, Elias creates a world which asks questions about identity, presence and how you can find your place in the world through photography.
Theo Elias is a photographer and artist who lives and works between Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden. Elias’ works often deals with interpersonal relationships and the wish of belonging. His photography has been awarded and he has exhibited in several internationally exhibitions.
His debut book Smoke, published by La Fabrica, was 2019 the winner of Photo London & La Fabrica Dummy Award.
Mighty Bear makes for a mysterious new face on Iceland’s electronic scene. Pollinating the worlds of drag culture and abstract electronic pop. Mighty Bear’s show is audio-visual in nature: any danger of laptop-staring, knob-twiddling boredom is immediately dispelled by the accompanying glittering gowns and towering heels, rippling film imagery, masks, wigs, and a bold, charismatic approach to the stage. Strutting onstage in a ghostly, glamorous mask to a soundtrack of intense but ethereal beats, Mighty Bear is the undisputed dark queen of the Reykjavík electronica scene.
AnA makes electronic dance music for the future. Her main goal is making visual experiences cooperate with musical performance. AnA’s music can be described as a mix of experimental electronica with inspiration from the Japanese Pop Scene.
During the evening the book Smoke will be for sale together with a specially designed poster.
The event is carried out with kind support from IÐNÓ and the Swedish-Icelandic Corporation Fund.
