The Festival of Nations in Akranes has been an annual event since 2006. Its aim is to foster understanding and promote the coexistence of cultures as well as to reduce racism in Iceland. This year’s festival celebrates the richness of cultural diversity in Iceland, showcasing a vibrant program of performances from talented artists from various countries. Highlights include live performances by traditional Thai dance by Celina & Karol Zouk, Icelandic folk dance by Þjóðdansafélag Reykjavíkur, Bulgarian dance by Hop Trop, and much more.
Attendees will have the chance to sample culinary delights from over 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Argentina, China, Colombia, India, Italy, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Spain, South Africa and Ukraine, among others. Additionally, the event will feature handcrafted items, traditional clothing, and products from local stores, offering a truly immersive cultural experience. In this context, it is worth pointing out that enjoying international cuisines makes people more tolerant, according to a new UK study.
The event is hosted by The Society of New Icelanders (Félag nýrra Íslendinga) on Sunday 26 October 2025 from 14:00 to 17:00 at the local sports hall (Íþróttahúsið) in Akranes, located at Vesturgata 130. Akranes is just a 40-minute drive away from Reykjavík.
