According to a new survey made for Visit Reykjavík (in Icelandic), 71% of residents of the capital area are positive towards tourists. This is an increase from 2024, when 66% said they were positive. Vast majority see tourism as a positive contribution to the economy in the area, for example for restaurants, cafés and bars. When people were asked about negative aspects of tourism, most frequent answers related to increased traffic from rental cars and buses as well as pushing up housing prices. However, 61% found the positive effects of tourism to outweigh the negatives.
The views change by season though, 53% think there are too many tourists in the summer months (peak season) but the ration goes down to 22% in winter.
