This June, Hafnarfjörður, a cute town on the outskirts of Reykjavík, is the scene of vicious battles, lively markets, music and storytelling at the Viking Festival each summer. Held in the Viking Village in the center of town on June 12-17, the festival is a tribute to Vikings in general and pays homage to their ways of life.
The Viking Society of Hafnarfjörður is very prominent during the festival. Its name, Rimmugýgur, comes from an axe from one of the Icelandic Sagas and it means Battle Troll. The society consists of people that are interested in the culture of Vikings and wants to preserve their traditions. So at the Viking Festival they dress up as Vikings and fight each other with viking weapons. There’s also a market for the entire duration of the festival, open from 13:00 to 20:00, where you can buy viking crafts and goods.
The schedule is packed every day, there’s sailing, viking games, battle shows, music, storytelling and loads more of fun activities. You can see the whole schedule right here!
